The most commonly used high temperature silicone fluids are the phenyl containing siloxanes, because they offer the most excellent thermal stability. The low volatility and inflammability make them particularly suitable for use in high temperature oil baths.
This oil has a remarkable diversity of uses - from brake fluid, special lubricant to electronics. It makes excellent, safe, low-volatility lubricants, heat transfer media. It is found in high temp hydraulic systems, inertial guidance systems, delicate timing and photographic devices. Suitable for grease and oil formulations (when mixed with thickeners, such as silica and bentonite). High performance greases can be produced by compounding the silicone fluid with extreme pressure additives, such as polytetrafluoroethylene or molybdenum disulphide. Used as band-ply lubricant in the rubber industry, damping fluid for meters and liquid springs in shock absorbers and load cell applications.
Lubricity, oxidation resistance, thermal stability and shear resistance are enhanced in comparison to dimethyl silicone fluids. For polymethylphenyl siloxane the service temperature is -55ºC to 290ºC. The gel times are higher than 700 hours (at 230ºC) and more in comparision to mineral oil (4 hours) and Silikonöl ISO (25 hours).
