Silicone-based fluid with unique properties, as it is neither petroleum-based nor derived from organic chemistry. Products of this type represent the first—and still the only—major class of polymers originating from inorganic chemistry. Silicone fluids offer an exceptional diversity of applications, ranging from brake fluids and lubrication to electronics. They serve as excellent, safe, low-volatility heat transfer media, mould release agents for rubber, plastic, and glass parts, and lubricants for most non-metal-to-metal contacts. Silicone fluids are used in hydraulic systems, inertial guidance systems, precision timing devices, photographic equipment, and as dielectric fluids in electronic components such as capacitors and transformers. They are also suitable for polishes and other high-gloss, water-repellent coatings, antifoams, and grease or oil formulations when combined with thickeners such as silica or bentonite. High-performance greases can be produced by compounding silicone fluids with extreme-pressure additives such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) or molybdenum disulphide (MoS₂).
